Dr. Finzi Illustrates
Art + Science = Total Body Balance
Eric Finzi on MPT

A true, modern-day Renaissance man, Dr. Finzi is a board-certified dermatologic surgeon, Ph.D., licensed biochemist, and molecular biologist, as well as an accomplished painter and sculptor. With the visual acuity of an artist and the skilled hands of a sculptor, Dr. Finzi applies his artistic ability to his medical practice by finely sculpting bodies using the Tumescent liposuction technique. "I realized how art and science shared in the fundamentals of adding, subtracting and balancing," says Dr. Finzi. "Most of my patients are asymmetric and my objective is to construct a more symmetric and natural flowing shape."

Dr. Finzi approaches each person as he does his art, as a "work in discovery." He preserves natural curves, enhances contours, and creates balance and proportion. He sees the whole picture and tailors a look that combines inner beauty with outer balance that often produces life-altering results. Dr. Finzi explains, "The psychological and emotional impact you can have on a patient is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. It's comforting to know that I can make a profound difference in their life."

Dr. Finzi's Art Background

Eric Finzi in studio
Dermatologic surgeon Eric Finzi, M.D., Ph.D., is also an accomplished sculptor and painter. His serious study of art began at age 13 with a scholarship to New York City's prestigious Pratt Art Institute. At the University of Pennsylvania, he studied fine arts and biochemistry simultaneously, often blending scientific and artistic experimentation. Throughout medical school, a doctorate, and a post-fellowship in molecular biology, Dr. Finzi continued to create works of art.

After finishing his residency at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Finzi opened his own art studio in Kensington, Maryland, where he works two days a week. Departing from his traditional oils on canvas and wood sculptures, he is now experimenting with epoxy resins. Using heat and viscosity, Dr. Finzi applies epoxy resin and oil paint with unconventional tools-syringes, straws, and cut-out paper cups-to create vibrant, multilayered abstract works on wooden canvases. In many cases, Dr. Finzi allows the painting to create itself. He explains, "The painting paints itself, and I'm simply the director. Each piece is an experimental discovery and centers on visual complexity. I could never make something as complex as what the chemicals create. So I let 'it' tell me what to do, flow with the process, and let the story naturally unfold."

Finzi, an award-winning painter and sculptor, exhibits his artwork in New York City and Washington, D.C. galleries.
